Veidekke to secure the E10 in Lofoten against rockfalls

Veidekke Entreprenør has signed a contract with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to secure the E10 north of Reine in Lofoten against rockfalls. Veidekke will construct structures over the road in places to secure against falling rocks, blast out cuttings in the rock and carry out various other protective measures to a total value of NOK 363 million excluding VAT.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is carrying out a comprehensive programme to secure the heart of Lofoten against rockfalls. In addition to protecting motorists, the aim is to take care of the unique natural surroundings of this national tourist route. And the work to be carried out by Veidekke in one of Norway's most beautiful areas is extensive:

  • Four protective structures over the road, at a total length of 975 metres (15,000 m3 of concrete)
  • Blasting out cuttings totalling about 190,000 m3 of rock
  • Securing the sides of the cuttings
  • Road building and drainage (2.5 kilometres)
  • Backfilling rock and restoring the terrain
  • Marine infill to construct shoulders (approx. 100,000 m3)

Work will begin in September and is due for completion during autumn 2014. The road is narrow in this section of the E10 and there are no opportunities for diversions. Unfortunately, motorists must therefore expect some delays and reduced accessibility during some periods.
